Medicinal Properties of Marigold

Genda or Marigold flowers are astringent,carminative,and stomachic. The flowers contain tannins and phenolic compounds,steroids,terpenoids,flavanoids,saponins,alkaloids which give it therapeutic properties.

Flowers are said to purify blood and flower juice is given as a remedy for bleeding piles and also used in rheumatism,colds and bronchitis. These are also used for treating skin diseases,scabies,liver complaints,and eye diseases.

The Flower has antibacterial properties and exhibit significant antibacterial activity against bacteria S.lutea,E.coli,B.circulence.

Marigold leaves have diuretic,antinociceptive (action or process of blocking the detection of a painful or injurious stimulus by sensory neurons),styptic (stops bleeding from wound,injuries) activities.

The leaves are traditionally used for treating kidney problems,swelling,muscular pain and are applied externally on boils and carbuncles. Infusion of leaves is used for managing rheumatism,cold and bronchitis.

In Unani medicine,sweet preparation made of tender leaves and purified sugar is prescribed in condition of no urine production,retention of urine and kidney problem.

The pounded leaves are applied externally on boils and carbuncles. The leaves are reported to have antioxidant,antifungal,analgesic activity and 18 active compounds,mainly terpenoids.

The leaves also exhibit antibacterial activity against various micro-organisms.

Marigold is an extremely effective herb for the treatment of skin problems such as inflammation of the skin (due to infection,physical damage),ulceration,varicose veins,haemorrhoids,anal fissures,mastitis,sebaceous cysts etc. It is also excellent remedy for treatingsun burn. Know the Camphor Tree

Camphor is a large evergreen tree native to Eastern Asia (China,Taiwan,Korea). It is also grown in several other countries including India at Dehradun,Saharanpur,Calcutta,Nilgiris and Mysore. The main product obtained from this tree is camphor or kapoor. All parts of camphor tree on distillation gives a semisolid oil from which camphor can be separated by a mechanical process.

The Camphor tree

The tree is large with height of about 20 m (65 feet). The leaves are simple,alternate;blades entire but may have wavy margins,mostly ovate,4-10 cm (1.5-4 in) long and 2-5 cm (0.8-2 in) broad,glossy green above,duller green below,with impressed glands below at major veins. Flowers are small,greenish white to cream,in loose panicles on branchlets of season;6 petaloid parts;12 stamen parts,usually 5-9 fertile stamens plus smaller sterile staminodes. The raw fruits are dark green,ovoid,dry,globose,and about 0.3 inch in diameter. They turn black on ripening. Every part of tree gives aroma of camphor due to presence of oil which is formed in the oil cells distributed in all parts of plant. These cells begin to form early in the growth organs,and are filled with yellow oil from which camphor is slowly deposited. The formation of camphor is brought about through the agency of an enzyme present in the growing pans of the tree particularly in the tissue within the cambium region.

In Hinduism, Durva(Doob) is one of the most sacred plant, only second to Tulsi. It is a plant used in numerous religious ceremonies since Vedic times as well as for medicinal purpose in Indian Ayurvedic medicine system. On Durvashtami Vrat (in Bhado), Hindu women worship Durva and fast. The rings made of this grass is worn during Hom, Puja and Yagya. Durva is also offered to Lord Ganesh during worshiping. Herb Description

Cynodon dactylon is a perennial grass. It is native to north and east Africa, Asia and Australia and southern Europe. Its plant is prostrate, creeping, stoloniferous, perennial;rhizomes rooting at every nodes;root system deep;stem creeping, long, slightly flattened, terete, glabrous, leaf blades grey-green, 2-15 cm long, 4 mm broad, flat to slightly keeled, edges rough, tip sharp;leaf sheath round, glabrous;ligule with ring of hairs or membrane;inflorescence spike, 2-5 cm long, 3 to 6 in a whorl;flowers spikelets with one perfect floret;glumes 2 mm long, lanceolate, acute at the apex, lower glume smaller than the upper;lemmas 2-8 mm long, 3-nerved, acute, pubescent or scabrous on the nerves;anthers 1.3 mm long, yellow;styles purple;seeds ovoid, about 1.mm long, yellow to reddish.

External medicinal use of Durva

Durva or doob grass is haemostatic, refrigerant, healer, and antibacterial. It can be made into paste and applied on skin for treating skin problems and improving complexion. Doob is beneficial in treating skin cuts, wounds, abrasions and similar skin problems. Leaf paste application on wounds, cuts, haemorrhoids helps in better healing. Few drops of doob juice is put in nostril to stop nasal bleeding or Nakseer. For headaches, leaf paste is applied on forehead.

Internal medicinal use of Durva

Durva is used internally for treating epilepsy, hysteria, bleeding in dysentery, piles, haematuria, epistaxis, menorrhagia, diarrhea, raktapitta, syphilis, urinary tract infection and many other diseases.

Durva is useful in gynaecological problems related to uterus. It strengthen uterus and stops abnormal uterine bleeding. It is also useful in minimising risks of miscarriage and supports normal feotal growth. The decoction of Durva plant is given in treatment of kidney stones.

Durva also shows aphrodisiac property. It improves male fertility.

It is very important to clean the plant properly. Since it grows near the soil, the leaves can be easily contaminated. Therefore wash it carefully to remove all impurities from plant surface. Always collect medicinal plants from pesticide free area. Do not take medicinal herbs that grows along roads, sewage, drains and any similar polluted area.

Durvadi Kera Thailam

Dhatura is an annual herb that occurs throughout the country. Its scientific name is Datura metel Linn (Synonym D. fastuosa L., D. alba Ramph;D. cornucopaea Hort.) and belongs to Family Solanaceae. In Ayurveda, its seeds, roots and dried whole plant are used for medicinal purpose.

Dhatura leaves have antitumor, anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory properties. Its flowers are anti-asthmatic. The leaves, seeds and root are anti- catarrhal, febrifuge, anti-diarrhoeal, anti-dermatosis.

Ayurveda classifies Datura in Upavisha Varga (secondary toxic drugs). UpVisha varg is a category of herbs with toxic effect on body. Hyoscine alkaloid

Various parts of Dhatura plants contains hyoscyamine and hyoscine alkaloids.

Hyoscine is the principal alkaloid of the leaves at all times.

Proportions of hyoscine and hyoscyamine in plant varies with age of the plant, duration of sunlight, light intensity, general climatic conditions, chemical sprays, hormones and certain other environmental factors.

Hyoscine alkaloid has depressant effect on the central nervous system. This alkaloid is used as the base for the hydrobromide salt which is used as a pre-anaesthetic, antisialagogue (diminishes or stops the flow of saliva), adjunct to general anaesthesia.

The alkaloid Hyoscine in large doses is a POISON that can cause delirium (Delirium is acutely disturbed state of mind characterized by restlessness, illusions, and incoherence) and coma.

Traditional Use of Dhatura

Dhatura is a medicinal herb and used traditionally to treat various ailments throughout the country. The seeds of Dhatura plant is used in treatment of leprosy in West Bengal and Rajasthan. In Rajasthan the leaves are used for treating Guinea worm disease (A parasitic disease caused by infection with the guinea worm). In traditional medicine, the leaves, roots and seeds are used in fever with congestion, insanity, diarrhoea, and skin diseases.

Dhatura has narcotic, acrid, anodyne, antispasmodic, intoxicating, and emetic properties. It is used in preparation of many medicines useful in treatment of fever, insanity, lumbago, sciatica, painful swelling and neuralgia.

WARNING

Dhatura is extremely poisonous plant. Toxic effect of Dhatura on body are dryness of mouth, intense thirst, increase in heart rate, and blurring of vision with prominent mydriasis, hallucinations, delirium, and loss of motor coordination which may further lead to coma and ultimately to death by respiratory failure.

In Ayurveda, the Dhatura is used only after proper Shodhan.Do not take any part of plant internally.

Medicinal uses of Okra or Lady's finger fruit

Okra is Anti-Diabetic

Okra is an effective anti-diabetic herb. Diabetes, which is metabolic disorder is characterised by increase in blood sugar level. The increased blood sugar level has a negative effect on all body organs. It is very important to maintain blood sugar level in normal range. Okra or Bhindi can be helpful in doing so. Bhindi has hypoglycemic (lowering blood sugar level in blood) and hypolipidemic (reducing lipid concentrations in the serum) activities which causes lowering of increased blood sugar level in diabetes.

The aqueous extract of Okra has maximum anti-diabetic effect. For preparing the aqueous extract, few okra fruits are taken (5-7), washed and chopped. These cut pieces are soaked in water at night. Next morning, the pieces are squeezed so that the mucilage enters the water. This mucilage containing water is taken orally in morning, regularly for one month to control the elevated blood sugar level.

Okra Cures Constipation

Okra is rich in fibre and mucilage. The high fibre content makes okra a good laxative. Fibres causes sufficient level of water in stool and mucilage further softens bowel.

Okra for skin conditions

The okra has antimicrobial and emollient properties.

For psoriasis and burn injuries, the okra fruits are grinded to make paste. This paste is applied on affected area and kept for 2-3 hours. This should be done for fifteen days.

Distribution of Ulat Kambal

This plant is distributed through out India up to 1500 m. It is also found in Bangladesh, Pakistan and the adjacent countries.

About the plant

Devil’s Cotton is a shrub or a small tree which reaches height of 1.8 to 3.6 m. Although plant can grow up to height of 9 m in wild. The plant propagates through seeds and stem cuttings. The plant has small hairs that can cause dermatitis. This shrub requires fertile soil with good drainage and well distributed rainfall. The flowers are about 5 cm in diameter. These are dark red, purple or yellow in colour. The Seeds are many, small, blackish, covered with silky hairs

Ulat Kambal is a medicinal plant. Its root bark has emmenagogue properties. Emmenagogue are agent that stimulates or increases menstrual flow. The roots are used as uterine tonic and for regulation of menstrual flow. The fresh root-bark juice is useful in congestive and neuralgic forms of dysmenorrhoea, amenorrhoea, urinary trouble, bronchitis, broncho-pneumonia, carbuncles and poisonous boils.

The root of plant contains abromine (betaine), friedelin, abromasterol, abromasterol A, choline, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol and octacosanol.

In a clinical study, 37 patients with chronic viral hepatitis B, were treated with daily dose of 600mg of Bhuiamala for 30 days. 59% of the patients lost the HBsAg two weeks after the end of the treatment. HBsAg is the surface antigen of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It indicates current hepatitis B infection. From this study, the authors postulated that Phyllanthus niruri might inhibit proliferation of the virus by inhibiting replication of the genetic material of the virus.

Traditional uses of Phyllanthus amarus

Phyllanthus amarus or Bhui amla is used traditionally for treating variety of diseases. The hot water extract of whole plant on oral intake has fever reducing and laxative effect. The decoction is also useful in fever reduction. In treatment of jaundice whole plant is dried and pulverised to get powder that is taken with buttermilk. Description of Terminalia belerica tree

Terminalia belerica or Vibhitaka is found throughout Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, and South East Asia, up to 900 m elevation.

Again after 24 hours they have normal platelets count and no symptoms of dengue.
